Windows Media Player is a music player software , videos and images ( photographs) made by Microsoft . Windows Media Player is part of the Windows Media platform developed by Microsoft . As the name implies , Windows Media Player was commissioned to carry out operations against the playback of digital multimedia file format Windows Media format ( WMA , WMV or ASF ) , MPEG Audio Layer 3 ( MP3 ) , and several other digital multimedia formats . Other parts of the Windows Media platform , is a Windows Media Services ( formerly known as NetShow Server ) , which served to drain digital multimedia data using streaming multimedia technology .
The latest version of Windows Media Player is Windows Media Player 12 .

History of Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player ( abbreviated WMP ) is a digital media player and owned media library application developed by Microsoft that is used for playing audio , video and viewing images on personal computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system , as well as on Pocket PC and Windows Mobile -based devices . Editions of Windows Media Player were also released for Mac OS , Mac OS X and Solaris but development of these has since been discontinued .
In addition to being a media player , Windows Media Player includes the ability to rip music from and copy music to compact discs , burn discs recorded in Audio CD format or as a data discs with playlists such as an MP3 CD , synchronize content with a digital audio player ( MP3 player ) or device other mobile , and allows users to purchase or rent music from a number of online music stores .
Windows Media Player replaces the earlier application called Media Player , adding features beyond simple video or audio playback .
Windows Media Player 12 is the latest version of Windows Media Player in July 2009 . It was released on July 22, 2009 along with Windows 7 and have not been released for previous versions of Windows .
